Homebrew and House Rules (DnD) / Re: Metamaneuvers
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:10:20 AM »
This concept of augmentation points seems really limiting, since no well-designed build will be able to take this feat more than twice. Maybe I'm missing something, but what's the problem with just taking each augmentation as its own feat, and letting the martial adept use it whenever they want? The increase in maneuver level will already prevent characters from using these on their most powerful maneuvers.

Also, maybe when they recover their maneuvers, they should choose at that point which metamaneuvers to apply. Kind of like how wizards prepare metamagic.

Homebrew and House Rules (DnD) / Re: Lexitheurge - Word List
« on: October 11, 2012, 05:16:35 PM »
I like the idea, but there are a few more things to consider besides the language itself. The important thing to remember is that you're making a class out of this concept, most likely one that would learn a few words each level. This already makes your idea of having nouns act on their own problematic, since learning just nouns would a much more efficient way of gaining power and versatility than learning words like "because" (which, parenthetically, I don't see as a very useful word in spellcasting anyways. I mean, who needs to explain things when you're working with magic?).

You also need a hierarchy of increasingly powerful words or sentences, and making longer sentences will probably not cut it. The word "fire," to me, sounds more powerful than "create a big sharp tooth." These things will need to be fine-tuned, but I think that on the whole, the idea shows promise.

Homebrew and House Rules (DnD) / Re: Disciple of Rock (bard/warlock PrC)
« on: October 05, 2012, 03:55:27 PM »
This idea is just awesome. It literally rocks. My only complaint, besides the imbalance of class feature power mentioned by Chemus, is that I think it could stand to be a bit more powerful. Either boost the warlock progression up to full, or add in another partial bardic spellcasting progression. Or both; someone using this PrC shouldn't have to give up their Dark invocations.

The Polling Place / Re: Homebrew Contest I: One-Spell Wonder Voting Thread

Sorry, guys. My entry's name is so long that it messes up the graph...

First of all, contest II should say that voting ends November 3rd, not October 3rd (it would be really weird otherwise). Second, regarding voting for the first contests, can people that submitted entries vote? And if so (though I feel like a jerk for asking), can it be on their own entries?

Chapter 1 - Remnant Magic / Re: Discussion
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:46:18 PM »
I just changed the introductory thread using the new name for the system, Remnant Magic. The classes and feats will quickly be similarly translated, and then I will finally begin sorting out the issues with the system. Sirpercival, now that the name change is official, you should probably change the name to match in the list of allowed systems for High Arcana.

I suppose that I could make it work; sorry. I guess I went a bit mad with the power of being able to put sub-boards inside other sub-boards. Mortals should not mess with such things.

Could I still have the name changed to "The Book of Seven Secrets"? I feel like the "Tome of" thing detracts from the originality of the concept. Sorry again for what I think is the third time I've asked to have this board renamed. I promise that this is the last time I ask.

You know, you can still use the root board...

Yeah, but... well, there's got to be a place for things involving multiple systems, and it just wouldn't look as nice to have the main sub-board cluttered with little things like that. Same reason there are no threads on the root board for New Mechanics and Subsystems, I imagine.

I realized that I'm going to need more sub-boards in my sub-board to explain how everything ties together. Can you please add 2 more sub-sub-boards, titled "The Book of Seven Secrets" and "Miscellanea"?

Also, could you shorten the title to just "The Book of Seven Secrets"? Thanks.

The Master of Opening and Closing is now finally done, complete with fluff! I'm especially proud of my explanation of the 2 main organizations, one that specializes in opening and another that is devoted to closing. Comments of all kinds would be appreciated!

Homebrew and House Rules (DnD) / Re: Ætherforge (3.5 base)
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:09:49 PM »
Nice concept, even though, like Hanako's new homebrew, the ideas are very similar to psionics and incarnum. First of all, considering the pattern for æther / level on the chart, you should end up with 15 at level 20, not 16. Now, on to the suggestions for more forgings:

  • Ætherbeast - Creates a monster made of living æther that attacks for you. Either give it a minimum of 1 and have the creatures get better with imbued æther, or make a different forging for each kind of monster. As for the monsters themselves, it would probably be easiest to apply a template to the Summon Monster monsters, but no matter what you do this forging is a must.
  • Mind of Æther - Fill your enemies' heads with too much æther so that they can't think straight.
  • Ætherial Inflation/Deflation - Fill the gaps in a creature's body with æther, increasing their size, or empty them of æther to shrink them.
  • Æther Puppet - Move the æther around your enemies to make them move involuntarily.
  • Æther Pressure - Make the æther condense in a bubble with high pressure to do damage every round.
  • Æther Eye - Become so attuned to the æther that you can scry on any creature in contact with it (so basically anything) within range.

Hopefully, these gave you a few ideas of forging effects that you hadn't considered. Sorry if some of them are blatantly ripped off of spells, but what isn't nowadays?

Sorry to be the first person to actually make a serious comment about this, but doesn't the "Improved Aha!" ability at level 7 allow you to keep rerolling your Sleight of Hand checks until you get a perfect 20? You should probably reword "Improved Aha!" by adding something like, "He still cannot use this ability more than once for any given attack."

You Break it You Buy it / Re: The Surelife Trick - An Infinite Clone Army!
« on: September 09, 2012, 04:03:52 PM »
The spell says specifically that limbs and other organs regenerate, as well as the heads of multiheaded creatures. It can only be cast on "you," so it only affects the being that cast the spell. To cast a spell, a creature must have a brain, or something similar to keep track of prepared spells (after all, you must meditate and concentrate to gain spells in the first place). Thus, Regenerate can only heal the part of you that has the brain - in this case, both halves. Regenerating a body from an arm won't work, but growing back the left side of your body will. At least, that's the most common-sense interpretation.

In that case, I would like to request that my board, the Magic of Residuum, be renamed "Tome of Mystery: The Book of Seven Secrets," and that everything currently in the board be moved to a sub-sub-board called "Chapter 1 - Remnant Magic." In addition, the 6 other sub-boards requested in Reply #101 should also be included in this board, named in the same form as Chapter 1. Thanks!

A sub-board with sub-boards.

Does that work? Would the board containing the sub-boards need to be a larger one like "Homebrew Optimization Contests" or "New Mechanics and Subsystems," or could there be a smaller board, like "Magic of Residuum," with even smaller boards in it?

You Break it You Buy it / Re: The Surelife Trick - An Infinite Clone Army!
« on: September 09, 2012, 07:02:08 AM »
EDIT: Oh, and a possible foil to this working: is that really how regeneration would work?  If you are not touching the body part, do mind that it takes 2d10 rounds, not 1.  And if you are touching the body part, the body part reattaches itself, so no duplication.

Oh yeah, I didn't see that. We definitely want to regenerate the other half of the body, not just reattach it, so I guess the process takes 2d10 rounds, or about 1 minute. A 3000 GP scroll of Surelife will give you 6 minutes, so if all the clones each find a way to get naturally chopped in half in the time it takes them to regenerate, and you pass the Ring of Regeneration around efficiently enough, you should have between 8 and 1073741824 of you by the end of a single scroll (64 on average).

EDIT: You know, it could be argued that you don't even need a second head to get this to work. The Regeneration spell says that it grows back all organs, so if your head got chopped in half, I'm sure each half would regrow the other.
