Sticky wicket Mimic
« Topic Start: June 21, 2012, 02:11:48 AM »
The Mimic automatically gets to try to hang on to any melee weapon that hits it. Is there any other creature (or, better yet, a template) that gets a similar reactive grapple style ability? I am designing a low level puzzle type encounter, and dropping a couple Mimics in would be too lethal. It looks like the save to avoid having a weapon stick is Con based so I could probably dial back the CR a bit with a reverse progression, but just using a new creature would likely work better.

tl;dr: I am looking for a monster besides the Mimic that gets to grab a weapon, start a grapple, or otherwise slow down anyone attacking it in melee.

I remember a Conan story, where a trap consisted of a panther illusion projected over a magnet the size of a large anvil. Once the weapon got stuck, a grapple-focused temple guard entered the room.

And lo, did the clerics labor mightily over the sacred iron, immersing an impervious ceramic crucible in the sacred flames to heat it past the Curie temperature. Then did the great god Thor cause the living lightning to pass over it and through it continuously while the block slowly cooled that all the domains would emerge aligned. When the sacred iron had cooled once more, it was transformed. The temple then placed an image of a savage beast over it to warn off those who could be warned and to tempt into rash action those who could not.
